How Do I know if I need therapy?

If you have been asking yourself this question, this blog is for you!  It may be that you have been asking yourself these types of questions:

  • Why am I anxious all the time?

  • ·Why do I overthink all my decisions?

  • I wonder if I can improve my self-confidence with therapy.

The good news is that if you are asking yourself these types of questions, you are already paying attention to your emotional and mental wellbeing.  So how do you know when is the right time to reach out to a counsellor for support?

1. If you are becoming overwhelmed by your feelings. Everyone feels stressed at some point in their lives, however if you are finding it difficult to manage, it could be a sign that seeing a counsellor would be beneficial for you. If you are noticing:

  • Persistent anxiety or worry

  • Feeling emotionally drained most days

  • If you are struggling to switch off your thoughts

Therapy can help you understand why you are feeling that way and give you healthier ways to manage them.

2. You are coping, but life feels difficult.

  • You may feel exhausted all the time.

  • You feel that you can not tell anyone that you are struggling – as you are the strong one.

3. You feel like the same problems keep occurring.

  •  You may notice patterns that keep occurring in your life.

  • For example, similar relationship difficulties, struggling with maintaining personal boundaries, experiencing self-doubt or people-pleasing tendencies.

Therapy can help you explore where these patterns come from and support you in how to change them.

4. You have been through something difficult.

  • Life events such as death, divorce, trauma or abuse, a difficult childhood and/or major life changes can all leave emotional wounds.

  • Sometimes you just need a space to talk without fear of judgement or a place of understanding.

5. You feel stuck.

  • You may feel unsure of your direction in life.

  • Unable to move past certain feelings or events.

  • Trapped in old habits or thought patterns.

Therapy can provide you with a place to process and reflect and see things from a new perspective.

Taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health.

If you are feeling overwhelmed or stuck speaking with a counsellor can be a positive step forward.
